2026.01.30 PBL “Learning from the Land”|Old Port Island, Hsinchu
【Learning from the Land|Old Port Island, Hsinchu】
🚩 This time, students visited Old Port Island in Hsinchu—not for a simple field trip, but as a hands-on, place-based learning experience.
Guided by the leader, students first learned to “listen”:
to how the land was formed, how people lived here in the past, and how human activity has intertwined with nature over time. Step by step, students came to understand that a place is not just a point on a map, but a living, functioning system. Learning shifted from imagining through textbooks to experiencing in person—standing on the land, feeling the environment with their senses. When questions arose, the focus was not on rushing to answers, but on observing, thinking, and allowing understanding to build gradually.
At the Food Forest Biodiversity Park, a single statement from the guide made everyone pause:
"These plants are edible."
In that moment, students slowed down, carefully observing the plants, asking about their uses, growth, and relationships with the surrounding environment. Discussions arose naturally, and understanding deepened almost unconsciously.
When students are willing to stop, observe a plant, and understand a piece of land, learning quietly takes place. ✨
The value of field-based learning is not just leaving the classroom—it’s about relearning how to see the world. Through firsthand exploration and observation, students learn to understand a place and gradually cultivate respect for the land, recognizing the deep, enduring connection between humans and nature.
