College Prep Biology
This course begins with the overall process of science, then dives right into the main characteristics shared by every living thing and an introduction to the big ideas uniting the study of biology. You’ll study the chemistry of molecules important to life and use that foundation to study cells, organisms, and the interdependence of living things and their environments. You’ll relate cell structures and parts to life-sustaining functions, such as respiration and photosynthesis. You’ll learn about DNA, genetics, and inheritance. You’ll study evolution and the evidence behind it. Charles Darwin pieced together observations and ideas to form the theory of evolution and how it shaped the diversity of life all around you. You’ll study life forms from simple bacteria to complex plants and animals. You’ll notice that adaptations accompany each group of living things to increase their abilities to thrive within their environments.
Students are given an opportunity to identify core concepts through the reading material and then apply that knowledge in review activities. Comprehension will be assessed through formative activities, multiple-choice exams, and a comprehensive final exam.
Chemistry
Chemistry is the study of matter, energy, and their interactions. Matter is everything around you and in the universe, so chemistry helps you understand your immediate world and the universe. In this course, you’ll learn about the composition of matter from the subatomic level to the molecular level to the macroscopic level. You’ll see how the same building blocks can be rearranged to form countless substances. This course will help you predict properties of different substances and the reactions that they undergo. You’ll see why water is critical to life on Earth and examine various types of chemical reactions that happen in solutions. You’ll be introduced to branches of chemistry like thermochemistry, electrochemistry, organic chemistry, biochemistry, and nuclear chemistry. You’ll discover why chemistry is critical in biology, engineering, and everyday life.

Earth Science
Physical Science
This course will introduce you to concepts that affect your daily life, including applications and devices you encounter throughout your day. You’ll review various types and properties of bodies in motion, how things move, the rate at which they move, and items affecting their motion. You’ll learn how to describe these properties and relationships through both text and calculations. You’ll also explore properties and sources of heat, temperature changes, and modes of transmission. You’ll be tasked with calculating unknown variables for heat-related problems and investigating heat-related substances and devices, such as engines. You’ll better understand musical sounds and how sound waves work. You’ll also be able to classify matter while looking at laws that govern how matter interacts. The technology and products you use every day result from nuclear and organic chemistry. You’ll review the development and properties of electricity, magnetism, currents, and circuitry. Students are given an opportunity to identify core concepts through the reading material and then apply that knowledge in review activities. Comprehension will be assessed through formative activities and multiple-choice exams.
